Well done on your first trip Chris, I agree with what others have told you about bait you can also try tipping your lug with squid I have had some decent codling on lug tipped with a nice squid head Smile Don't be frightened of using a bigger hook 3/0 to 6/0 with big baits especially at this time of year as you never know what might hit you Shocked I have had some big smoothound and seen conger eel caught off the pier. Yes no problem if fishing two hook rig put larger hook at top and smaller hook on bottom for flatties, have often pulled in a double (codling or whiting on top hook and flattie on bottom hook) although you can still catch something decent on bottom hook, as I said you never know what might take your bait Very Happy

Post  4wheelfisherman on Tue Nov 03, 2009 9:54 am

Thanks for this hook size picture, now it all makes sense.

Redjim. Thanks, I had a great time. Perfect for someone who cant get around to well. No stopping me now mate.

A chap on the pier today had a nice Cod around 3.5Lbs plus three whiting which were keepers. Cant wait to catch a keeper sized fish and see what it tastes like.

Best way to hook mackerel as bait

Post  4wheelfisherman on Tue May 18, 2010 2:57 am

As I have come from course fishing were maggots are easy to hook up. What is the best way to hook up mackerel so it stays on the hook. Also, what bait would you recommend for this time of year.

Thanks
Chris

The best way i have found ( others may say different but all work ) is to use fresh black lug tipped on the end of the hook ( size 2 ) with a small ( 1cm square ) of makky pierced with the tip of the hook through the skin, that and Peeler Crab is killer bait during summer around here boss, or just fresh black lug on its own, frozen lug also works quite well but as i get my own bait i prefer the fresh stuff

if you are useing big baits you could try a pennel rig in which you use 2 hooks one hook above the other that would keep you fish bait on the hook

Dave the bait man

Post  4wheelfisherman on Fri May 21, 2010 2:04 am

Met up and got some bait from Dave in Fleetwood. What a nice chap. Very helpful and has great knowledge of fishing in this area.

Bait is a very good prices and he has everything both fresh and frozen (god I sound like his sales rep).

Off fishing this Monday on North Pier so might see you there.
