bait and vacuum sealing question plus preservative?

Post  g4jnw on Sat Oct 09, 2010 3:55 pm

Firstly a thank you to h4ppy-chris
for his video

Have just bought one of them, an Andrew James model
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250304924898#ht_4400wt_906
I know its pricey but it comes with 6 mtrs of roll to start you off and the wife has loads of fruit she is preparing so thats the excuse Laughing

I notice that a lot of preserved bait now is sold like that but what i would like to know is what do they preserve the bait in first ?

We go fishing/holidaying in Scotland and the Scottish isles quite a bit with my caravan and usually take salted bait in case I can't get any, have tried the preserved bait (which got me onto vacuum sealing in the first place) and its like fresh stuff.
The problem I have with salted is that it slowly goes brown - SO if I salt then vacuum seal will the bait not go brown OR can I preserve it with something else prior to sealing?
I notice that the preserve stuff says it lasts months without freezing.

I bought the sealer to try and avoid the caravan fridge being full of bait and thought that at least i may get away sealing it then freezing and then taking it in a cool box but would be interested in how others have gone on, especially as the thread on using tesco freezer bags in the vacuum sealer is well over a year old.

Have you tried any of the above?

Have just watched the video and have heard of Viral haemorrhagic septicaemia before, looks like Dnr are having big problems and trying to help the issue by banning Non preserved dead bait - interesting.
Viral haemorrhagic septicaemia also occurs in europe, mostly from farmed fish getting out but if the EU took a similar view then we would all have to preserve fish, that would cause big issues here.
And I was just wanting to preserve bait for my trips, think I may experiment with borax/salt and mineral oil/rubbing alcohol before I vacuum seal and keep records to see what the bait is like to fish with - its all very interesting though.
Thanks for giving me the link
