Seasonal angling
The seasonal changes dictate which species we are able to target, and, more importantly when and where. Differing species require different conditions to inhabit feeding areas where we can target them. Acceptance of these limitations will help avoid blank or poor productivity. The biggest influence is sea water temperature, which itself is controlled by the climate. I have attached a link with graphic displays of Irish sea surface water temperatures. At the foot of the display are archived images going back several years. We know we have experienced a long cold winter and by viewing the surface water temperature display currently , compare it with the same period in 2009. The sea is currently colder. This means the season is further behind than the same period last year. Fish don't use calendars, they are influenced by seasonal change to govern their movements. Seasonal change is best viewed by we anglers by keeping an eye on water temperatures. My own observations are mainly based on the conditions required to bring in Mackeral and Tope. Years of careful noting the conditions when they have appeared have allowed a good judgement as to when they will return the following season.
